Stick, we often don't agree, but that is a link I have shared many times today with friends and family. Don't stress the history too much man cause it turns the young ones off as it did to most of us growing up. Mike is talking about TODAY, and he is bang on! I was one who was pressured by my family, friends, the school system, etc. to go to University because of my grades, IQ, etc, etc. What a waste of time and MONEY! All I learned to do was get ..... well, I can't say it all here. I went back to the business that I'd been running on the family farm for years while doing the school thing on the side. I was much happier and built it to be one of the largest in the county. Did I get rich? NO! Did I have a rich life? YES! Did I use my smarts to help others? YES! Did I earn the respect of my peers through all the associations, programs, research work, etc that I did? YES!.... many times over!

Those are things to be proud of in life, or at least be content with. Making money has never made any of my rich friends happy.... most are on their 2nd, 3rd or more marriages and otherwise miserable to the point I find it depressing to meet with them..... if they even have time away from scheming to to make more $$$$.

Thx for the link man.... well worth the time to check it out!   smile

I agree with most of what you say Ian, however.... I think you should experience learning a trade and going to college if you can do both.  My dad was a tool and dye man in a factory and also built his own home from the ground up.  I learned a great deal from him and to this day, do all my own construction work around my house.   I also went to a University and attained a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice.  The degree opened many opportunities for me in Law Enforcement and in life.   I believe strongly in formal education and became a faculty member at a local college as a secondary job.   Bottom line....learn a trade and get that college degree.  I will support that web site and will forward the info to my friends. police

Oh I agree Commander. I just think Mike is right about kids being pushed to college rather than taking pride in a trade. Too many college degrees equip you for nothing in the real world other than broadening your knowledge. I ended up doing a very mixed bag instead of pursuing my original program which was an honours BSc in Ag. I just found it too much theory and too narrow. Also I was working full time running the business so school kinda came second.

Our system is a bit different than the US as well. Colleges have only gained respect over the last 20 years or so, but now offer much more practical training than universities do. That is something that employers really appreciate and understand.
